How to read this comparison
Numbers tell part of the story, but not all of it. Here's what to pay attention to beyond the table:
APR range is not your APR.A lender showing 6.49%-25.99% isn't promising you 6.49%. That's the rate for their most qualified applicant. Your actual offer depends on your credit, income, and debt-to-income ratio. The only way to know your rate is to pre-qualify — which is why we recommend checking with at least 3 lenders before deciding.
Origination fees matter more than you think. A lender with a 7% APR and a 5% origination fee can be more expensive than a lender at 8% APR with no fees. On a $15,000 loan, that 5% fee is $750 deducted from your disbursement — money you never receive but still owe. Always compare the total cost of the loan, not just the rate.
Funding speed is situational. If you don't need the money until next week, a lender that funds in 3 days at a lower rate is better than a same-day lender at a higher rate. Speed matters when it matters — don't pay a premium for it when you don't need to.
“Best for” is the most important column.Every lender has a niche. LightStream wins on rates and fees for strong-credit borrowers. Upstart wins for thin-file applicants. Avant wins for accessibility. Match the lender's strength to your specific need.
