Personal Loan Lender Reviews
Every lender wants you to believe they're the best. They're not — at least, not for everyone. A lender that's perfect for a 780-score borrower refinancing $50,000 in debt might be terrible for someone with a 590 score who needs $2,000 for a car repair. Context is everything.
We've spent hundreds of hours reviewing each of these lenders — reading the fine print, comparing real rate offers, analyzing customer complaints, and talking to actual borrowers. Every review below represents a genuine assessment, not a rewrite of the lender's marketing copy. We flag the good, the bad, and the stuff they bury in the footnotes.

How to choose the right lender
Forget “best overall” — the best lender is the one that matches your specific situation. Start with these three questions:
What's your credit score? This determines which lenders will even approve you, and at what rate. If your score is below 620, focus on Avant, Upgrade, Universal Credit, and Upstart. Above 700? LightStream, Discover, and SoFi will compete for your business with their best rates.
How much do you need? Some lenders start at $600 (PenFed), others at $5,000 (LightStream). Borrowing more than you need just because a lender requires a higher minimum is never the right move.
How fast do you need it? If timing is critical, prioritize same-day lenders (SoFi, LightStream, Upgrade). If you can wait 2-3 days, your options expand and you can focus purely on rate and terms.
Pre-qualify with 3-5 lenders, compare the actual offers (not advertised ranges), and choose based on total cost — not just monthly payment or APR alone.
